At the bottom of the map there is a continent.
It runs nearly the full width of the sheet. It has bays, headlands, and a shoreline that turns the way real shorelines turn. Beside it, in Latin, sits a line that should not be possible. Recently discovered, it says. But not yet fully known.
The year is 1531. No human being will lay eyes on Antarctica for another two hundred and eighty-nine years.
The mathematician with the knife
Oronce Fine was not a sailor. As far as anyone can tell, he never went anywhere at all.
He was born in 1494 at Briancon, high in the French Alps, the son of a physician. He went to Paris and he stayed. Geometry, astronomy, sundials, instruments, calendars. And engraving, which matters here, because he cut his own woodblocks. The man who worked out the projection was the same man holding the blade.
He had a rough decade first. Fine spent time in prison in the 1520s, and the accounts of why differ, running from political trouble to the practice of judicial astrology. It did not finish him. Around 1531 Francis I named him royal lecturer in mathematics at the new foundation of royal readers in Paris, the body that would grow into the College Royal.
That same year he printed a map of the world in the shape of two hearts.
Two hearts and a southern shore
The projection is called double cordiform. The northern half of the world occupies one heart and the southern half the other, the two of them meeting point to point like a pair of lungs. It is strange to look at and it is mathematically serious. Gerard Mercator borrowed the same scheme for his own world map in 1538, and copied what Fine had put in the south.
Fine's map appeared under the title Nova, et integra universi orbis descriptio. It also traveled. A Paris edition of Simon Grynaeus's collection of voyages, Novus Orbis Regionum ac Insularum, carried it in 1532, which put the sheet into the hands of people all over Europe who were thinking hard about what was left to find.
And in the southern heart, filling the polar half of the page, is the continent.
The legend across it is usually transcribed as TERRA AUSTRALIS RECENTER INVENTA SED NONDUM PLENE COGNITA. Southern land, recently discovered, but not yet fully known.
Not proposed. Not conjectured. Discovered.
Hapgood's reading
In 1966 an American history professor named Charles Hapgood published a book called Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings: Evidence of Advanced Civilization in the Ice Age. He taught at Keene State College in New Hampshire, and he had done the work with his students, over years, on tracing paper and graph paper.
His claim about Fine's map was not small.
Hapgood argued that the southern continent on the 1531 sheet is Antarctica, and that it is drawn without its ice. He read coastal detail into it. Mountains near the shore. Watercourses running down to the sea in places now buried under glaciers. He identified what he took to be the Ross Sea, the Weddell Sea and the peninsula that reaches up toward South America.
Follow that where it goes. Fine could not have surveyed it. Nobody in 1531 could have. So Hapgood proposed that Fine was copying, that his sources were older charts compiled from still older ones, and that somewhere at the bottom of that stack was a seafaring culture that mapped the world before the ice closed over the south.
He had form on the underlying idea. Hapgood's earlier book, Earth's Shifting Crust, published in 1958, carried a foreword by Albert Einstein and argued that the outer shell of the planet had slipped, moving whole regions into and out of the polar zones.
The maps, in his telling, were the receipt.
The case against
The conventional answer is that Terra Australis was on maps long before anyone had a reason to draw it, and that Fine was simply the best draftsman to inherit the habit.
The reasoning goes back to antiquity. Ptolemy's Geography, recovered by Renaissance Europe, showed the Indian Ocean closed off by land to the south. Older Greek argument held that the weight of the northern landmasses required a southern counterweight to keep the world in balance. Mapmakers filled the empty bottom of the sheet with the continent that theory demanded.
Critics of Hapgood point at the size. Fine's southern continent is enormous, reaching far north of where Antarctica actually lies, in places pushing up toward the latitudes of southern Africa and Java. Antarctica does not do that.
They also point at a name. A great peninsula on Fine's southern land is marked Regio Patalis, and Patala was a place at the mouth of the Indus, on the other side of the world. It appears to have migrated south through the globes of Johannes Schoner, whose work Fine drew on. That looks like compilation, not survey.
And Fine got a coast wrong that Europeans had actually visited. On his map, North America is joined to Asia.
Then there is the ice itself. Standard glaciology holds that Antarctica has carried a continental ice sheet for something on the order of thirty-four million years, since the Eocene ended. On that account there is no window at all, because there were no humans to sail anywhere.
Hapgood's own method draws the sharpest fire. His identifications required rescaling, shifting latitudes and reworking projections until the outlines agreed. His critics regard that as building the answer into the process. Hapgood regarded it as reconstruction, the ordinary business of pulling a distorted copy back toward its original.
The part that will not go away
Set Hapgood aside entirely. The legend is still on the map.
Recently discovered. That is a peculiar thing to write across a landmass produced by Greek symmetry. The standard reply is that Fine meant Tierra del Fuego, glimpsed by Magellan's expedition on its way through the strait in 1520, and taken by mapmakers as the northern shore of the southern continent.
That reply is reasonable. It also asks one dark headland to become a mapped continent with an interior, a coastline and a name, inside eleven years.
And there is Schoner. His globe of 1515 shows a southern landmass separated from South America by a strait, five years before Magellan sailed through one. Conventional scholarship treats this as a lucky garble, most often a Portuguese report of the Rio de la Plata estuary mistaken for a passage. The coincidence has never entirely stopped bothering people.
What survives, then, is not Hapgood's ice-free Antarctica. It is his question, which is narrower and harder. A shape on an old map came from somewhere. Every time one is traced back, it lands on an earlier map, and that one on an earlier one still, and the chain runs out of documents before it runs out of coastline.
What is left on the sheet
A woodcut. Two hearts. A continent at the bottom of the world in 1531, with a caption insisting somebody had found it.
Either it is inheritance and inference, a Greek idea passed hand to hand until a very good engraver made it look like geography.
Or something was known, by someone, and the knowing outlived the record of how.
The map does not say which. It only says: not yet fully known.
