Gobekli Tepe's Pillar 43 and the Comet in the Stone
Pillar 43, the Vulture Stone, stands in Enclosure D at Gobekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey, carved by hunter-gatherers more than eleven thousand years ago. In 2017 Martin Sweatman and Dimitrios Tsikritsis matched its animals to constellations and read it as a date stamp for a comet strike in 10,950 BC. This article sets out the pillar, their reading, the excavators' reply and what is still open.
