Tartary
For about three hundred years one word covered much of northern Asia on European maps. Ortelius printed it in 1570, and by Colton's Central Asia of 1885 the large lettering read Russian lands, Turkestan, Afghanistan, Chinese Empire.

Great Tartary and the Name That Filled the Old Maps of Asia
Tartary was the name Western maps and encyclopedias gave northern and central Asia from the 13th century to the 19th. Writers from Nikolay Levashov in Russia to the forum author KorbenDallas in 2018 have read it as a vast lost country, pointing to the 1771 Britannica, printed flags and a capital at Tobolsk. This investigation reads those records on the page and ends on the one flag nobody has traced.
