The Grand Canyon's forbidden zone
A block of buttes in the Grand Canyon carries names out of Egypt on the survey sheet. A 1909 newspaper story and a 1992 book made that ground a forbidden zone; the park's closure lists and the story's own directions say something else.

The Grand Canyon's Forbidden Zone and the Cave on the Front Page
The Grand Canyon's forbidden zone is a claim: that the ground around Isis Temple and Cheops Pyramid is closed to hide the cave G. E. Kinkaid described in the Arizona Gazette of April 5, 1909. David Hatcher Childress gave it that name in 1992. This investigation reads the page, the map and the park's 2026 closure list, and ends on how little of the canyon has been surveyed.
